You’ve heard it. I’ve heard it. Depression is a chemical imbalance.
Well, in the past five years, I’ve read studies and articles that have questioned this.
And today I began reading another book by Kelly Brogan, MD, called “A Mind of Your Own” (2016) This is what she says:
“…not a single study has proven that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Depression is merely a symptom, a sign that something is off balance or ill in the body that needs to be remedied” (Brogan, 2).
I have found this to be true over and over and over again as I coach people. I found it to be true in my own life.
If now is not a good time to dive into this book, then allow the preceeding thought to mull around in your mind. Let it take root. Let it allow you to begin to question why one in four women in their forties and fifties uses psychiatric drugs and why depression is a grossly misdiagnosed and mistreated condition today (ibid, 2).
Stay tuned as I share tidbits from each chapter of this book in future posts.
